10 Steps To Goal Setting
Recommended Reading

At the end of 2003 I appeared on BBC Radio Gloucestershire to set a New Year Resolution Competition. The winner was Nicky Bale who plans to run the London Marathon and raise £30,000. The prize was eight sessions of coaching. I will ask Nicky to let us know how she gets on.

Nicky’s goal is a very good example of a SMART goal (see 10 steps to Successful Goal setting below).

Goals are like signposts. We can use them to move us forward in life. Goals are a way of measuring progress and evaluating the effectiveness of our actions. If you do not reach your goal by your target date it is an opportunity to look to see if you are truly committed to that goal (it’s OK if you are not). If the actions you have taken are appropriate. Here is an action plan to help you achieve your goals.

10 Steps To Successful Goal Setting

  1. Set aside some thinking time. What dreams do you have? What changes do you want to make? Make a list of all the things you would like to have/be/do? Imagine the people, feelings, places you want to be part of your life.
  2. Go over your list & puts dates by when you expect to achieve these outcomes. Make SMART goals-Specific, Measurable, Action Oriented, Realistic, Time bound.
  3. Write your goals down. Things you're most committed to/excited about/will give you the most satisfaction. Winston Churchill said "Until you commit your goals to paper, your intentions are like seeds without soil."
  4. Make a list of why you want to achieve your goals & what benefits you will get & anyone else if that's appropriate. This will give you motivation & encouragement to get going & keep going!
  5. Describe the kind of a person you need to be. What qualities you'll need to achieve your goals.
  6. Visualise yourself when you've achieved your goal. The sense of pride & achievement you'll get. It feels fantastic doesn't it!
  7. Create an action plan - the steps you'll have to take to achieve your goal. Make sure you break your actions into do-able steps & that you include dates by when you'll complete each step.
  8. Get support- tell friends, get a buddy hire a coach, join a group/club.
  9. Meditate on your goal for a few minutes twice a day. Sit quietly & think about yourself having achieved your goal. See & hear all the wonderful details.
  10. Take immediate action. What can you do this week to achieve your goals?

Good luck! I'd love to hear how you get on.
