Do you have a Success Bank Account?

“Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it you will land among the stars.”

Les Brown

Fabulous! Do you aim high, and really go for what you want? "Oh but I might fail" I can hear that gremlin whispering in your ear (I know that voice only too well myself). A variation my gremlin pipes up with is "you’re not good enough to ______" (I won’t bore you with my list of gremlin reasons, you can fill in the blanks for yourself).

How about this proposition - what if there’s no such thing as failure only feedback? I went to a brilliant transformational seminar (the isa Experience) it really helped me to change my thinking and lighten up on this failure business. I heard the story about Thomas Eddison, he carried out nearly 10,000 experiments before he invented the electric light bulb! He learnt from each experiment and modified his tests until he got it right. If he’d felt like a failure he’d never have persevered (and we might still be in the dark!)

Having a positive attitude is key to having a successful life. You really can change the way you think! At the isa seminar we were asked this brilliant question which I’d like to ask you now, - what would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? My follow up question to help you answer that is, what are you really passionate about? Life Coach Fiona Harrold says that passion is the first rule to success (see Good Books).

So why did I launch in and talk about success and failure? Because I think of them as two halves of the same coin. As soon as we think about doing something, up pops that gremlin voice saying "don’t do it!" And then up it comes up with the list of reasons... "you might fall flat on your face, you risk looking really stupid…" and on and on.

Successful people, it seems to me, concentrate their attention on their vision, their goals; they have a ‘can do’ approach. You may have heard the expression "you see what you’re looking for."

How often do you look for success in yourself? And what’s your idea of success anyway? Do you have a clear picture or a set of goals that you have to achieve in order to be successful? Maybe success for you is bringing up well adjusted kids, having a happy marriage, feeling contented. Success means different things to all of us and the definition of success often changes throughout our lives.

Do you feel successful? Have you asked yourself that question recently? If you don’t you really can change your thinking and develop a good habit, especially for those moments when you feel low or that you’re no good. Let’s face it we all have our black mood moments. So how do you feel successful and does it really matter? Feeling successful helps you to be successful. When we’re successful we become players in life and we’re able to make a much greater contribution, and we’re more fun to be around. Is that enough reasons to start with!

Self Coaching - Why not invest in your success and build up your reserves, like a success bank account? Like any savings account it needs building up and the best way to do that is to develop a habit.

Action - Set up a new good habit and commit to building up your success bank with daily self recognition, acknowledge your strengths, your wins, the things that you are proud of. Keep a journal for one month and make a list of 10 acknowledgments every day before you go to sleep. Appreciating your talents, gifts and acts of kindness will increase your success account. When you are kind and generous with yourself I promise you it’ll rub off and you’ll be more generous with others.

I’d love to hear how you get on.
